Steps
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick.
5. Using a round cookie cutter or glass, cut out scones from the dough and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
6. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the scones are golden brown.
7. Serve warm with jam and clotted cream if desired.
