Steps
1. Start by toasting the slices of whole grain bread until golden brown.
2. Spread the mayonnaise evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
3. Layer the romaine lettuce on one slice of bread.
4. Add the thinly sliced red onion over the lettuce.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
6. If desired, add slices of tomato or cucumber for extra flavor.
7. Top with the second slice of bread, mayonnaise side down, and gently press.
8. Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately.
