South Indian Style Cabbage Poriyal

A classic South Indian side dish featuring finely chopped cabbage sautéed with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and grated coconut, perfect as a healthy accompaniment to rice. This recipe serves 10 and balances mild spices with fresh ingredients.

Steps

1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. 2. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. 3. Add urad dal and chana dal; fry until golden brown. 4. Add dry red chili and curry leaves; sauté for a few seconds. 5. Add chopped green chili if using. 6. Add finely chopped cabbage and turmeric powder; mix well. 7. Sprinkle salt and cover the pan; cook on low heat for 7-10 minutes until cabbage softens, stirring occasionally. 8. Remove the lid and cook off any excess moisture. 9. Add grated coconut and mix well. 10. Cook for another 2 minutes, then turn off the heat. 11. Serve warm as a side dish with rice or dosa.
